An online poll has now named the new Seven Wonders of the World. These are:
Peru's Machu Picchu, the Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan, Mexico's Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, the Colosseum in Rome, Taj Mahal in India and Brazil's statue of Christ the Redeemer.
The modern wonders were chosed by a worldwide poll of some 100 million online users. Further information on the poll can be seen on the New 7 Wonders. The same website has now launched the nominations for the New Seven Wonders of Nature.
Some countries really went to town to get their particular 'wonder' recognised. In Jordan, for example, the Royal Family were involved and led a national campaign costing tens of thousands of dollars. There was even a Miss Petra crowned and voting kiosks where set up in the capital Amman.
In Peru they opened up computer terminals in public plazas to encourage people to vote for the ancient city of Machu Picchu.
But whatever the result, and how it was come by, they are all surely worthy winners.
